A school with OUTSTANDING features- Ofsted 2008

The Curriculum

The curriculum is carefully planned to ensure continuity and progression of children's learning throughout the school so that each child may reach full potential. Within the National Curriculum there are core subjects of English, Maths, Science, I.C.T and the foundation subjects of Technology, History, Geography, Art , Music and Physical Education. The curriculum also includes a modern foreign language of French. The core subjects of Literacy and Numeracy occupy the greater part of the timetable.

The Literacy Hour

To enable all pupils to develop to their full potential and to increase their ability to use and understand English the government introduced a renewed Literacy Framework. Through our teaching we encourage the fullest possible development of abilities in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Working with the teacher in the Literacy lesson the children are taught the skills of speaking and listening in different contexts. They are taught to read and write for a wide range of purposes. Their Literacy skills are then practised in pairs, individually or in groups with the support of the teacher and teaching assistant. We have a reading team in school who regularly support the children with their reading skills.

We actively encourage parents to support thier child in the Literacy hour both at school and at home.

National Numeracy Strategy

The Government has set national targets for numeracy and to acieve these has constructed its National Numeracy Strategy. Numeracy is an important part of mathematics. It is defined as "knowing about numbers and number operations. It requires an ability and inclination to solve numerical problems."

We provide daily maths lessons of 45 to 60 minutes, with approximately half of the session as whole class teaching. An emphasis is given to oral and mental work. Learning may be extended through out of school work.

Information and Communication Technology:

All eight classrooms have an interactive whiteboard, to enrich classroom teaching and learning. Each classroom is equipped with computers which are networked and have access to the internet including the Windermere Junior School website and the school Moodle. Children also use a bank of laptops to develop their I.C.T. skills and support the curriculum.

Through the use of I.C.T. we aim:

  • to establish familiarity and confidence in using computers
  •   to support work in a wide range of curriculum areas
  • to have the ability to process information, data storage and retrieval of information
